“Powerfully charged performances” (Musical Opinion, U.K.) of “real chamber music, as it should be” (La Scena Musicale). Critics praise the “artistry, poetry and impeccable technique” (La Scena Musicale) of Duo Concertante, the violin and piano team from Newfoundland, which has performed hundreds of recitals across Canada, the U.S. and abroad since 1997.

All three of their highly praised ATMA Classique recordings, Of Heart and Homeland, À Deux, and Wild Honey (which features new Canadian works written especially for them), received ECMA Best Classical Recording nominations (2001, 2003, 2005); they release It Takes Two (Marquis Classics label), a collection of encore pieces arranged by Canadian composer Clifford Crawley, in April 2009. The Duo’s next recording project features works written for them by R. Murray Schafer, Kati Agocs, Chan Ka Nin, in collaboration with the irrepressible Barbara Budd as narrator. All of these works have been given successful premieres by Duo Concertante, including the Schafer Duo for Violin and Piano where Nancy and Tim performed it “beautifully” (Ottawa Citizen) at the 2008 Ottawa International Chamber Music Festival. There, Dahn and Steeves also participated in a special children’s concert and other chamber music performances.

Timothy Steeves and Nancy Dahn are the Artistic Directors of the Tuckamore Festival and professors at Memorial University.

Nancy Dahn, violin - Duo Concertante

Nancy Dahn, violin

Hailed as an artist “so genuinely interesting to listen to one forgets how good her technique is”(The Sunday Herald), violinist Nancy Dahn has created an international career as one half of Duo Concertante with pianist/husband Timothy Steeves. Critics have described her performances as “vigorous, passionate and red-blooded”(CBC’s Sound Advice) and praised the “great mastery of her playing… her singing and poignant sound… She never sacrifices beauty for the sake of virtuosity” (La Scena Musicale).

Dahn received her training at the New England Conservatory of Music with Masuko Ushioda, the Juilliard School with Glenn Dicterow, and at the Cleveland Institute of Music, where she received a doctorate in violin performance with Donald Weilerstein. She has participated in summer festivals such as the Banff Centre for the Arts, the Colorado Music Festival, the Britten Pears Festival, the Taos School of Music and the Tanglewood Music Centre. A winner of numerous competitions, including the concerto competitions of the Cleveland Institute and New England Conservatory, Dahn was a finalist in the Louise McMahon International Competition.

Nancy Dahn is Professor of Violin and Viola at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Co-Artistic Director of the Tuckamore Festival.
